Free Range Chickens and Eggs
Blue Laced Red and Black Wyandotte Breeding Stock
Our happy girls range free during the day and are cooped only at night. Laying now are about twenty Black Sex Link hens under the watchful eye of their proud rooster.

Sex-links are cross-bred chickens whose color at hatching is differentiated by sex, thus making chick sexing an easier process. Black sex-link (also called Black Stars) are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a Barred Rock hen. A wonderful brown egg layer that will weigh a little over 5 lbs. The females are black with gold hackle and breast feathers and are egg laying machines. The males are black with white barring.
In the spring of 2009 we have ordered 40 Blue Laced Red Wynadotte chicks to start our breeding flock. We have already gotten a beautiful Black Wyandotte rooster and he is a handsome boy as you can tell from the picture. The Wyandotte is a breed of chicken originating in the United States. The first examples of the breed appeared in 1870s. Wyandottes are a docile, dual-purpose breed kept for both eggs (Wyandottes are brown egg layers) and meat. Their rosebud combs and small wattles make them very good for our cold climate. The Wyandotte is a breed that suits both free range and confinement in a run. They occasionally go broody. They tend to be quite friendly, and not flighty, and so make good pets for people. They are also very vocal, uttering soft clucks on a regular basis. Blue Laced Red: The blue laced red is a buff/red colour with a blue that looks just like grey around the edge of every feather.

The results are in: Eggs from hens allowed to peck on pasture are a HECK of a lot better than those from chickens raised in cages. The conventional egg industry wants very much to deny that free-range/pastured eggs are better than eggs from birds kept in crowded, inhumane indoor conditions.
A statement on the American Egg Board’s Web site says “True free-range eggs are those produced by hens raised outdoors or that have daily access to the outdoors.”
Most of the eggs currently sold in supermarkets are nutritionally inferior to eggs produced by hens raised on pasture. That’s the conclusion we have reached following completion of the 2007 Mother Earth News egg testing project. Their testing has found that compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised free range on pasture may contain:
• 1/3 less cholesterol
• 1/4 less saturated fat
• 2/3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta carotene
